How it works
Because of the difference in the specific gravity (weight) of the gases, separation can occur in an argon/carbon dioxide cylinder filled by conventional methods. The carbon dioxide, which is heavier than the argon, settles at the bottom of the cylinder, while the argon (lighter) tends to stay at the top. Inconsistent mixing on withdrawal from the cylinder is a common result.

To address this issue, a popular practice is to “roll” the cylinders to mix the gases. This procedure does not guarantee mixture homogeneity, and is difficult, if not impossible, to do.

The Phoenix Welding Supply Sure Shield mixing system was developed specifically for argon/carbon dioxide mixtures. It consists of a specially designed “dip” tube with strategically placed openings along its length. This creates turbulence in the cylinder during filling and promotes superior gas mixing, while producing a homogeneous blend.
